Been grading papers.....
Sorry guys but I have been grading papers and what I have seen so far is not good. I have decided you need to work on the review yourselves first and we will do it in class instead of having fun outside. Sorry!!!!! Look back a few days in the blog and go to the interactive CNN site for some review.

The Cold War Heats Up!
Today we talked about the hydrogen bomb and the devastating effects it would have on the world and Houston in particular. And of course we had a special guest during 2nd period (EEK!!!). In looking at the quizzes so far, most of you did pretty well.

We talked about the four areas of the US-USSR Relations: The Truman Doctrine (Iran, Greece and Turkey), The Marshall Plan (build - economically - Western Europe), The Berlin Airlift, and the establishment of NATO (if one goes to war, all go to war which is completely opposite how Congress felt with Wilson and the League of Nations). Don't forget that the Soviet's answer to NATO was the Warsaw Pact.

Today we analyzed the political cartoon "Step on it Doc" and everyone was very good at analyzing the details in it. Way to Go!!!! We watched a short film on the civil war and revolution in China and it is now a communist country. The US recognized Chiang Kaishek (the overthrown leader) and that he and his followers are now on Taiwan. We then discussed the Korean War: North Korea was communist and had USSR and China helping them while South Korea was democratic and had the UN forces which included the US and General MacArthur. Don't forget that MacArthur was fired by Truman because he wanted to invade China and Truman didn't want to expand the war outside Korea.

DUCK AND COVER!!!
We analyzed primary documents by looking at a fallout shelter picture, duck and cover drills and a graph on US and Soviet Nuclear Warheads. You also read about the 2nd Red Scare. Remember the first one was in the 1920s after WWI.

US-Soviet Relations Heat Up
Yes this is the Cold War, but the tensions between the two Super Powers are really heating up! We discussed the Berlin Airlift and the significance of that to the Cold War and how that led to the organization of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization).

Germany Gets Divided
Today we discussed the division of Germany into four areas controlled by France, Great Britain, the US and USSR. The area controlled by the US, France and Great Britain became West Germany and the USSR controlled area which includes Berlin became East Germany. Berlin was also split into East and West even though it is located in the middle of the communist controlled East Germany.
We also read about how the United Nations was created and the importance of the General Assembly and the Security Council.

Five Minutes More...
This is the first blog that will review the day and ask you to go somewhere on the web as an enrichment for the lesson.
Friday's lecture was on the beginning of the Cold War. In February 1945 the Allied leaders (the Big Three) Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin met in Yalta (in the Soviet Union) to discuss what needs to happen in the world. Remember that WWII has not ended yet, but the Allies were very close to getting Hitler/Germany to surrender. The Yalta Agreement states:

- Soviets would declare war against Japan and in return get territories in Asia
- they would divide Germany into four zones until free elections could take place (France, Great Britain, US and USSR would each control a zone)
- Stalin agreed to allow free elections would be held in the Eastern European countries that Germany took prior to and during the war, but the Soviets controlled now during the end of the war
- Stalin would cooperate in developing the new international peace keeping organization, The United Nations
Stalin did not do as he said he would...so the Cold War begins.....

WWII Test Review
The Vocabulary...
Island hopping was the US plan to defeat Japan by attacking islands in the Pacific that weren't as well defended and gradually move up. Containment keeps Communism under control. Manhatten Project was the building of the Atomic Bomb. Neutrality Acts were passed by Congress in 1935 that made it illegal for Americans to sell guns to any country at war. "Big Three" refers to FDR, Churchill and Stalin. Rationing is limiting goods during a time of war. Kristalnecht or night of broken glass was a night of anti-Jewish violence (broke the glass of all Jewish owned businesses). Appeasement is giving into demands - Britain and France gave into Hitler. Genocide is killing of one group (race) of people. Isolationism is when a country wants to worry about itself and not what other countries are doing. Totalitarism is when a country is run by a dictator like facism, nazism and communism and has total control of the government and economy. Mobilization referes to getting ready for war. Interment camps have people relocate from their own homes to a government controlled area so they can keep their eye on them.

Germany started WWII by invading Poland/Midway was the turning point of the war in the Pacific/the Allied invasion of Europe occurred in Normandy, France/the Bataan Death March took place on the Phillipines/the first sea battle fought entirely by aircraft was fought in the Coral Sea (by Australia)/Japan invaded Manchuria - China in 1937
